Mister Ajikko 3

Hum hum our little chef is out to make the best spaghetti that can even top Marui.
Am I the only one that thinks that they should have given Marui Yoshio a better name? He’s Italian and this is pretty much a Japanese name. Oh well.

Mister Ajikko Chapter 3

Actually the text is never clear about whether he’s an Italian chef meaning he’s from Italy or he’s an Italian chef meaning he specializes in Italian cooking. I try to leave it ambiguous in the translation too, just leaving it as ‘Italian Chef’, since that can be taken either way. Personally I assume he’s Japanese and just specializes in Italian.

Ah I see, thanks for the clarifying; Should’ve realized.

From comparison with other europeans in the anime version and an event that keeps him some time away from Japan, I think he is a japanese that follows italian-ish culture and way of life. In the anime dub version that was broadcasted years ago where I live (being rebroadcasted now), one of the changes they made was giving him the name “Mario”, the only fake term, along with the name “Sushi” for Yoichi, that is not not changed as the series progress. There they keep changing names, dishes, ingredients, past facts, current facts…

From what i know, the chef is Japanese. The only western is the head of French Cuisine. All the rest are japanese.
